No, not quite. It is a HACKLED pattern made with a wound soft Chinese or Indian hackle, & not a hair one. The choice of a soft hackle was specific as it allowed the fish to "suck the fly in" without any resistance.

Chris, it was not about YOU feeling the fish, it was about THEM not feeling it.

Default a real bwo

not for me either I am afraid, not a critiscm of the fly it's well tyed, but I have my own bwo patterns that work for me,do these flies tyed in this manner give a better hook up or is it for just show, personally my bwo pattern would take me half the time to tye & I reckon would catch me more fish, this is just my opinion before people go jumping on the bandwagon.Craig.

The late Richard Walker had a theory that stiff hackle fibres would or rather could act as mini-springs & brush or bounce the fly away from a fish when it took. So his latter dry flies used either soft cock or even hen hackles. This was at a time when "genetics's" were only just starting to appear from Metz in the late 70's early 80's. The hackles were nowhere near the quality of the ones available today, I have some from that time.

I asked Neil Patterson to give my branch of the FDG a talk around that time & he agreed. It was the first talk he'd ever given to any fly fishing club & it was superb, one of the best we've ever had & we've had 100's over the years from many top name anglers/tyers.

I think it may well have been published first in Brain Harris's International Fly Fisher, before Trout & Salmon got hold of it. He chose the softest cock hackles he could find, as that was (then) far more important to him than the colour of the hackles. He fished the Wilderness stretch of the Kennet, & fish there could/can be very timid at the best of times. So anything that would make the fly easier for the fish to swallow was of significant importance.

Works for me too. I really like the design of it. I reckon it will sit perfectly on or in the surface film.
