I have this DVD along with his "A Beginners Guide to Tying".
As I am going back to basics with my tying (because I do it so infrequently) I am still working my way through the patterns on the "Beginners" DVD. I have watched the "Irish Lake Flies" DVD and look forward to tying those flies in due course as I have never tied traditional patterns before.
As to buying/rental I think that is a personal choice. There is no doubt that if you look through the SBS guides on this and other fora you would probably find instructions on tying the same patterns as on the DVDs, likewise you will find videos on U-Tube and other sites with a bit of searching. For me buying the DVD is worth the money as I prefer video to SBS guides and I can watch the DVD when I have no internet connection (still happens in several hotels, especially in the Welsh countryside

).
I think much the same can be said for any fly tying DVD, they do have a limited 'lifespan', especially if you tie frequently.
Given the above, Frankie's DVD are good quality with good photography and commentary as each fly is tied. There do not appear to be any Patterns/Material list given for each fly, so I have had to note this information down as I have been watching. There is no booklet/insert in either DVD case.
