Hi, So you want "yarn" that floats, such as polypropylene &/or similar ? Booby cord or the actual fritz type chenille ? If it's the latter two, then try Castlefeathers on ebay in the fly tying section. Very good quality & prices. He wholesales & supplies to several top competition teams.

Not that I'd ever stretch the boundaries of flyfishing so far as to tie one (cough bullsh-t cough ), but I have a couple of suggestions.

Tiemco do 'Aero wing' which floats like a cork, although it's a bit dear. Alternatively, buy a pair of hiking boot laces that are braid wrapped round a polypropylene core - the core is essentially ready-teased out aerowing, and probably works out a bit cheaper.

You could tie some boobies up and fish your chosen fly new zealand style under it.. BUT IMO the thingamabobber indicator is spot on and easily adjustable.

This was the first link I found on google...

...but any fly tackle shop should have it. It's a 'permanent' waterproofing agent designed to be applied to newly tied flies, or even materials prior to tying in. It needs 24 hours to cure properly. If you get proper polypropylene yarn, you shouldn't need it though (just my opinion ) because polyprop is non absorbent and hollow cored like deer hair. Amazing on natural materials though - deer hair dries, for example, stay properly dry for a lot longer if you treat them with watershed. Worth having a bottle on the bench.
