Given what's going on in Japan at the minute, dont be surprised to see even more price hikes on Japanese hooks, Their manufacturing industry was already in trouble and I'm told they expect to lose at least 50% of their Japanese business this year . This will mean they either cut back production or increase prices. Given that the production is planned well in advance a price hike is my best guess.
As a commercial tier I buy by the thousand on a regular basis. That said my quantities are not sufficent to generate huge discounts so the best regular price for top quality hooks that I can get at the minute is around £65 per thousand, Of course there are occasional bargains to be had.
I think that's still pretty cheap, 6.5p per fly. If you look around the auction sites, and things like the Fly Dressers Guild auctions you often find hooks very cheap. I just bought around 4000 2 x L/S hooks in sizes 8 to 16 for £38 at the London Branch auction.
Incidentally the Surrey branch have an auction on the 11th of April , the catalogue is online at the branch website. I Don't think there are many hooks though.
Regards
