Default Shredge

The dressing that I have is from Flyfishing Skills on Stillwaters (Peter Mackenzie-Philps):

SHREDGE

A slight modification of Tony Knight's pattern

Hook Yorkshire Sedge Hook size 10
Thread Olive
Body Dubbed seal's fur or substitute, in a light cinnamon colour (tobacco). Aim for a thicker front end, or a fat carrot shape.
Wings Any pale grey feather, laid well back. Best of all to tie one wing in at a time, on the sides, not on top.
Hackle Bearded, a pale ginger colour, known nowadays as Carnill Ginger. hen hackle is best, but cock will do.

The fly can be weighted, and fishes best in the summer months, and after midday. I have had most success fishing this pattern very slowly, in a sink and draw.

Used to be a great favourite of mine, in fact I put it in my book 'Trout & Salmon Flies of Scotland'.
The name Shredge comes from Shrimp/Sedge and it is a Tony Knight pattern.
The dressing above is quite close to the original, but variations are important.

Silk: Brown
Body:Tobacco coloured seal's fur, shaped as above
Rib: Narrow flat gold
Wig; Paired slips of mallard blae (greyish) with the natural curve of the feather downwards, tied fairly low over the back.
Hackle: Long-ish pale ginger hen tied over the wing.

The curve of the wing is, I feel, important, giving it that shrimpy look.

Smile Thats the boy!

Thanks very much Brian & Stan i still have some Yorkshire sedge hooks.I was on a course up in Harrowgate many moons ago & i went to Peter,s place to fish his lake,he gave me the loan of some tackle i caught a fine 2lb rainbow & missed a few due to brewers flu,he even asked his flytyer (sadly i cant remember his name) to give me a lift back into town.He was quite a helpful bloke i bought quit a a lot of quality flytying material from him during the years the service was second to none,I dont know if he had family. He,s up in the happy fishing ground in the sky now, probably giving casting lessons for a glass or two, anyway many thanks i am going to tie a few Wellie
