Default Clyde Style Flies - New Book

I have had the extraordinary good fortune to have been given a wonderful little book, consisting of some hundred pages, each meticulously hand written by a gentleman by the name of Tom Forsyth, from Lesmahagow, who fished the Clyde throughout his long life. The book lists detailed dressings, some accompanied by illustrations, of the many fly patterns used by the author in a lifetime of fly fishing on the Clyde and other Scottish waters. Of particular interest will be the many Clyde-style patterns, with which many forum members may be unfamiliar.

I have just finished transcribing the complete book on to my website. Interested members may view the book by clicking on this link:

The clyde style patterns have interested me since viewing Highlanders website. I'll have to tie a few and give them a try next season. As for fishing them, would normal wet fly tactics bring success?

Thanks,
Brennan

Thanks John, for the url (and the transcription). Very interesting.

On a related subject, I recently took part in a Clyde & Tummel theme fly swap. Here are the pictures I took of the flies I received back.

You will know as much about that as I do. I am afraid I am no expert.

Hi Brennan

I agree with Roy, as W C Stewart recommended in the Practical Angler (1857) fish them up stream on short lines or maybe up and across.

Thank you John for an excellent piece of work

Steve

Very nice John, thanks for putting his writtings into public domain. I might have met the gentlemen in question at one time many years ago.
It has been my long time ambition to put this style of fly more to the fore.
Many anglers have not even heard of it & many more think it is confined to the river of it's birth The Clyde but not true. This style of fly will catch in any water that Trutta frequents & in any part of the world. Good of you to take what must have been a considerable time to collate it all. Sure Mr Forsyth will have a chuckle from his lofty height.
Meanwhile a wee look at one 1/4 side of my "dark" Clyde fly box for those that may be interested.
