Default Hoppers

Hi all

I'm in the process of tying up some hoppers for the comming season. I dont have an issue tying them but there are so many variants it becomes confusing.

I am just wanting an effective run of the mill hopper i can use in most situations. I will be using them mainly on scottish lochs.

I was wanting to know

Should i add a butt on?

What is the best ribbing (oval tinsel, wire, mylar)?

Or am i thinking too much into it?

Any advice, pics etc are appreciated

Thanks in advance

Alan

Butt - Optional. No big deal either way, and will not affect the way fly fishes. A cunning little butt of Glo-Brite flourescent floss can sometimes be a winner though. Try a black seals fur hopper with a No.5 (red) butt... rarely fails.

Fine wire for the rib to keep the weight down. Just keep them dead simple mate.. light and sparse, and legs to the side or above so the hopper nestles down into the film a.s.a.p.

Don't be without the black and red mentioned above. Also, feiry brown, ginger, orange.

Partial to the black with a red holo rib myself , would reckon they are worth tying one or two (dozen ).

tightlines jonboy.
