Default Red Fox Squirrel Soft Hackle

Hi,

I was tying some Red Fox Squirrel nymphs yesterday and decided to tie one in a soft hackle style.

Very nice, has a march brown look about it, should be very affective in the faster shallow streams.

Nice and buggy, I like it.

byhaugh1, Would you happen to have Dave's book or know the "Official Original" dressing for this fly? He and his wife where in Phoenix last month and he mentioned that he ties this in a couple of versions. A friend asked if I knew the original but I don't have anything that can be called definitive.
Thanks.

Sorry, I don't. I have one he tied for me, but can't seem to locate it now. He's quite a guy. You know he moved back to his original home. No longer in Mountain Home, AR at all. It seems like it was in Michigan or some such state. He is cutting back I believe.

My recollection is that he used the squirrel belly fir for the abdomen. Then a mixture of guard hairs and underfur from the back with antron. Tail, of course, was back hair. I think he then added turn or so of partridge......
Sound right?

Yep, that sounds right. Much like a hares ear but with squirrel and partridge hackle collar.
Thanks

Dave Whitlock does a very well known version of a Red fox squirrel nymph, Oliver Edwards is quite keen on it. A quick google found 1760 references to it.

With 1760 all being different.

Someone on here has been kind enough to send me a photo of Dave's original, happy to forward it to anyone that's interested.
