Default Orkney sunburst muddler

Think this is the second muddler I've tied as I'm not really that genned up on them, its supposed to be an orkney sunburst although this one has rather a large head. Interested in any comments on how it could be improved. Also I'd like to buy some knotted PT legs before I self destruct. If anyone knows anywhere I can get them at a decent price I'd be grateful.

Tied on kamasan B175 size 12 although a B170 might have been preferable.
Sorry photo a bit chopped.

I would have liked to see a tail on it either marabou or globrite and a slightly denser palmer.
Im sure ST will come a long and help out
Scissors should scale the head down a bit

Not making things easy for yourself tying that on a 12 Mark. Like the legs, some reckon legs don't bring anything to a muddler but I like them. As for getting Knotted PT, Veniards do so **** ones sold in a pack with a single knot, but they also do some cracking double knotted ones which are still attatched to the feather, and available in quite a few colours. My local (Foxons) stock them but I'm sure you'll get them from any Veniard stockist.

Thanks dabhoy and stuart, the pattern I was baseing this on didn't call for a tail but I see where your'e coming from. I'll see if my local tackle shop has the veniard legs, the ones on the feather sound just the ticket.

Size 12? simples......not

I would be happy with that style and standard of finish on any of my muddlers, Mark. I much prefer the 'exploding' look as opposed to tying and trimming it as tight as a mouses ear (ooh, Matron!). I agree with Kev though that on this offering the head is a little on the fat side. Personally I would have left some of the deer hair trailing underneath too, but not as much as on top.
Agree with Pengs about the legs... a bit superfluous on a muddler in my opinion.
Nice colour combo though, and sure to catch

Thanks Rob thats a big help, I did try to keep the deerhair on top but thought at the time it might look better with a few bits goin astray underneath, its a bit too tidy for me I would prefer it more scruffier looking which for me will not be hard to achieve.

Thanks emerger1981 and wullie for the advice, it is very good quality deerhair actually, probably the best I've seen for depth of colour.

Taken a few things on board that have been mentioned above, got rid of the legs and used less deerhair and also let a few strands of deerhair hang down for a more buggy look and added a tail to balance it out more. So hopefully getting somewhere and watch out for a splurge of muddlers on here......well i do need more tips ya know
Could do with some curved scissors for a better cut I think.

Default muddler

that,s better. curved scissors do help mate a wee orange partridge hackle just behind the deer hair would set it of nicely. all you need now is practice and more practice.. remember its addictive this muddler lark.
