Default Size 32 midge

Hi,
Am using my "micro jaws", but still hard to load the Tiemco into the vise. Can't find fine enough deer hair though.

I've tied small, 24. Don't know how you do it on even smaller hooks but good un. I did watch a guy at last year's BFFI tying micro patterns, wings and tails etc. Absolutely astounding. Needed magnifying glass to see them.

I tried some 32 s for a laugh a while back with just a black body and palmered hackle which was the smallest feather on a genetic neck that I had.
Not easy to tie and you really need to tie sort of blind.
How about trying it with cdc instead of deer hair.

I'd need a magnifying glass just to find the hook let alone actually tie a fly on one.

It's 'people like you' that make 'old people like me' .. well, feel 'old.'

Try Donegan OptiVisor if you need good magnification. They work well for me when tying the tiny stuff.

Hi Darwin

I just had a look at these, I like the way you can flip them up when you don't need the magnification.

Which strength do you recommend ? I see they are made in a range of magnifications with different focusing distances.

Hi Kisauni,
The choice has to be a personal one. I use 3x for tying tiny midges as I can't focus well close up, and can't see a #26 hook without help. I want to try the 2x for general use. The greater the magnification the shorter the focal length, so my face is right on the vise, not the best situation but it works. (hope I am saying that right). These can be ordered online or jewelry supply companies carry them. the lens are much better than cheap plastic ones from discount stores. Do try them out before you buy to make sure they will work for you.

This is kinda true. I have a few dozen midges that are little more than hooks and thread.
