Default Help-started tying salmon flies

Though I've not fished for salmon in a very long time and then Not fly fishing in america I'm hoping to get out some ime in the near future and fancy tying some flies when I do. I've done some using the trout fly materials I already have, but salmon flies call for more exotic materials and I wonder if any one could advise me on what to get and not to get? I don't really fancy tying tubes till I get a feeling for singles as I did buy some Salar Singles a while back just for this purpose. Any advice no matter how trivial is much appreciated.

Have you looked at the Davie McPhail video's on utube? He's tying some cracking salmon flies in all styles.

Good, solid explanation on the how to, too.

You must be keen byron, someone once told me that you need at least 2 years experience tying normal flies before progressing to salmon flies otherwise its a bit like going from a vespa to a kawasaki ZZR600. If your'e interested I can give you a link to a good site which has lots of salmon fly related stuff, but can't post it here becos of conflict of interests.

Not quite sure by what you mean by exotic? Think trout flies can be just as bad, but anyway have a go at this.

Yellow Bucktail
Orange bucktail
Black squirrel tail
Blcak chinese cock cape
Yellow chinese cock cape
Orange chinese cock cape
Golden pheasant crest
Black floss
Silver mylar or silver holgraphic tinsel
Silver oval tinsel
Gold oval tinsel
Pearl twinkle

Flies that could be tied with that lot

Cascade
Ally shrimp
Silver Ally shrimp
Yellow Ally Shrimp
Stoats tail
Silver Stoat Tail
Thunder stoat
Tosh

All of the above should catch fish.

Default Thanks Cammy

I've got most of your list of stuff. What I meant by "exotic" materials is macaw, toucan, chatterer substitute, bustard quills, that sort of feather.

You won't need any of that sort of stuff these days.
The list Cammy has done will do for quite a lot of your requirements.
You might want to add some Arctic fox to the list.

Don't worry, Neil-I bought a jungle cock cape last year and have only used a small bit of it.
