Default Cannis

At my local water there is a huge amount of cannis (if thats how you spell it) and they won't feed on anything else. How can i immatate these flies?

Thanks, Jay

I used a 20 cream f fly, if nothing, then I go for a lure, small in size, 12 or 14, casts whisker sometimes does it.......

Don't try. Instead have a go with a jumble of two or three to hint at one of the little rafts of Caenis spinners that you will see during Caenis events.

The fly I prefer is a worn out (herl body nearly smooth) Double Badger.

Dick Walker invented a fly to do the same thing. He called it Lucky Alphonse and it consisted of a size 12 or 10 hook with several little white herl bodied and white hackled flies tied in a row on the shank of the biggish hook. It is a very good ploy when you see the fishes' noses coming out of the water at a steep angle as they engulf these rafts, like whales taking a shoal of herring.

One tactic is to give them something shockingly different - strip a mini lure or put on something bright and attention grabbing... easier to side step the issue than try to imitate these little devils.

That's what my American friend says. "Give 'em a snickers bar" is his cry as something outrageous goes flying out...works too.

They are not impossible ,Geordie AKA Alan Nixon ties a lovely #22 white fly which has worked well for me at the begining and end of the hatch middle of a blissard of these its an greased up orange cove pattern nymph waked back !
Geordie strangely for a man who ties such tiny flys so well is at the moment a leading exponent of long lead lining !

But they are very difficult. The curse has been the beating of many a fly fisher, myself included over the years. Imitating the fly is not the problem, getting them to take it in a myriad of naturals certainly is.

Default Caenis

I agree with Highlander.
My tact in wild trout lochs has been to sit back open a beer & watch to see how big the trout in the loch really are.
It amazes me how the water comes alive with fish rising right up to the side of the boat.
I've always treated the snow shower of caenis as the anglers curse. Perhaps wrongly as there are usually some great fish on the move during a big hatch.
