Default Your Favourite Tool

Apart from your vise, what is your favourite fly tying tool? I don't tie very often now, but I have tied for more than 40 years and my favourite tool is my home made whip finish tool. I have tried many factory built jobs over the years but none has worked as well as the one below.

I copied it from a Veniard's catalogue back in 1967 (I think) and made it from parts of a teleprinter at work. Once I had it fine tuned to my liking, I had it bright nickel plated and the finish has lasted well.

I prefer a Matarelli style whipfinish tool myself ( and I prefer using the tool to doing it by hand - some may disagree )

I'd say my favourite tool has to be the dubbing whirl though. Just the simple Darrel Martin style one though.

Least favourite tool: the Edgin Hair Snare. Well, I say that but I've never actually used it .

Cheers,

.D.

My 1790's triangular section sail maker's needle in a 1950's medicine bottle cork with a flat cut in it so it won't roll off the table. It is quite the best dubbing needle I've ever use and thirty years ago I used it on a fishing holiday to lance a cyst on my chest that was ruining a fishing holiday in Scotland...

My favorite tool, after the LAW Bench vise, has to my my pair of Fiskars scissors.

These orange poly-pro handled scissors are now entering their fourth(!) decade of service. I use them to cut anything, from metal wire to the finest of thread. They will not turn dull, as they were never sharp to begin with...

I love 'm to death!

Cheers,
Hans W
