The best hair for cdc & elk is Deer.

I like the coastal deer hair from Cookshill for this.

WCB,

You may wish to review the short video clip I made on tying the CDC&Elk. In it a suggestion is made which hair I prefer for the pattern, and information on characteristics to look for:

Cheers,

The buoyancy of the deer hair is good enough to float a Kamasan B175 no problemo, I've been using size 12's and the trout like them. I'd say the heavier hook acts as kind of keel and aligns it nicely for a quick retrieve over the water surface.

I'm looking to tie these flies in size 16-14 and possibly down to 18 as a general fly.

I use a para adams for 90% of my dry fly fishing but am not as good a tying as i would like so find tying a para hackle on size 16-22 hooks a pain.

I was hoping this fly could be the answer to my prayers

How about a cdc pattern like the F fly, that's pretty straightforward for smaller patterns.

I totally agree on that DB! I think bushier flies often need more weight underneath to get them to sit properly - unless one is very very careful to get the wing perfectly aligned.
