Default Funnel Dun PMD

Hi,

I have been intrigued with USD flies since I read Goddard and Clarke's book which I think was in the mid 70's.

Others tie/use this pattern?

How's your success rate??

Thanks,
Byron

Looks nice, good tying.
Goddard and Clarke wrote the Educated Trout in the early 80s, also featured in a BBC Narural World documentory.
The USD never really took off, fidley to tie and gallows tool needed. I attempted some myself but never used them, now I don't have any and no reason why not. Easier to tie these days with wing posts etc.
From reading recent books by both, they too don't seem to bother with usd any more.

Hi Wobbly,

I was inspired by their book: "The Trout and the Fly". I thought it was written in the mid 70's, but I checked and it was 1980.
That's the book which had the convoluted method of tying an USD. You had to use a "catch loop" of monofilament.

Hi Byron, had same problem when using the nylon mono loop, even with a gallows tool. Could never get the hackle to lie right.

Hi Byron, nice tyings, I also watched the video recently, and became quite interested in them, I have tied a few but found them very fiddly.
I may have another go before the season opens again, you have inspired me, so thanks.
If they look half as good as yours I'll show you, but don't hold your breath, my last efforts were dogs dinners.
Let us know how you find them to use etc, I would be interested.
Cheers Steven.

Thanks Mr. Trout. I'm sure your ties are better than mine. I will be fishing this pattern in early April and will report back on its success or failure - I'm sure it wouldn't be the fisherman............LOL
