Vice base

Hi ive got 2 tying vices both table edge mounted.
I noticed at the Newark fly fishing show the people doing the tying demo`s used vices with a free standing base plate.
I have a very heavy base plate off an angle poise lamp and with a bit of work it could find a new life as a fly vice base plate.
is there any advantage in a vice with a base plate. Other than being able to place vice where i want.
I have on old table that i am allowed to call mine so not a problem leaving table set up.
