Default Newbie Questions.

Hi. I know nothing about fly tying, but I recently bought a full kit, off Ebay.

In it there were a load of boxes of hooks:
Kamasan b440 18, Mustad 18 dry, Drennan dry fly 14, Big Eye Down hooks size 20, Kamasan size 16 b100

I also got a load of stuff, like:
Moorhen wing, Bluejay wing,Grizzle hackle, dyed hairs ear, short cock hackles, peacock herl, moleskin, marabou, deer hair, grey partridge neck, parapost,dubbing....
And a load more. Different coloured varnishes/utc threads, 6/0, etc

There are loads of fly tying videos online, and I got a couple of books.

But I dont have the exact materials that they use in the books and on the videos though. And they don't use the hooks I got either.
What goes with what?

Hi.

Ive been buying quite a lot of flies from shops, so I have a good idea of what works for me and what I like.

I was just wondering about general stuff like, are there only certain types of flies you should tie on 'eye down' hooks?

And should you only use certain sizes of thread, with certain sizes of hooks?

Some of the flies Ive been buying from shops: Paradun/Klinks

Should I basically just choose the nearest colour's and hooks Ive got to these, and use them? Just kind of make it up?

Cheers.

Take one of those Drennan size 14 hooks and put it in your vice. I hide the point inside the vice jaws.

Have you got black or brown tying thread?
If yes then use whichever colour of those you like best.
Use some of the peacock herl and one of those grizzle hackles and follow these instructions...

You will soon get into the hang of it.

Fly fisher if you are going to be tying those smaller flies I would suggest threads a bit thinner than 6/0 as that is what I initially started with and wornered why I got so much bulk, as when learning you tend to put on more wraps than is necessary.
What denier of utc is it that you have as it may do but not very good for dubbing particularly when starting out.
