Default Size 20 Bottle Washer

I was reading a blog by Gary Borger. He was describing some midge patterns and one was the Bottle Washer.

Hi Confused,

It is Gary Borger's pattern. I'm guessing that it is something like the Griffith gnat that we all fish as a midge pattern. With the exception that it is just emerging and has a small trailing shuck.

That is my guess. I will let you know if I find more information on the pattern. You do know who Gary Borger is?

I think it might be a variant on the nylon fly, a tiny fly made up by a few strands of nylon to use when fish rise to the knots on the leader. Don't have a picture but it was published in BEET (a Dutch/Belgian) fishing magazine.

emerger 1981,

How you doing? Hope all is well. I will let you know if it works. I must say I humbly disagree with you on whether it looks "nothing like a Griffith's Gnat". I believe it resembles such without the peacock...
Have a good one.

thats more like it
it might take a greedy fish or two but surely a griffiths or something along the midge look will suffice alot better, i personaly wouldnt fish that for the sake of looking like nothing..
out of all the patterns gary borgers come up with and fished thats got to be the worst one iv seen,
do him justice and promote a better one of his patterns,
and to you..

getting there.. can you not get size 20 hackles?
whiting are doing midge saddles and the necks tye down to the 20's
tye a griffiths with a tail rather than a imitation, not worth fish turning away from your fly.. one of the main parts youv trimmed away is most of its trigger

But then it would just be a Griffiths Gnat again. The Griff is the driest of dries (I think it's even allowed on the Peacock water) being held aloft by a few hackle barb points, you could hardly even calculate the area of the fly that comes into contact with the water. I suspect Borger's pattern is intended to fish in, rather than on the film, and be vaguely reminiscent of an emergence of some description, hence the trimmed hackle.... and the 'stuck shuck'.
