Default Henry Ford attitude to colour

My mind is focused on the start of the season and the kaleidoscope of colour appearing in the forum at this time has me wondering if I am missing out. My box for the early months is black. There is a range of sizes and styles of Bibios, Bibio Muddlers, Watson's Fancys, Kate McLarens, Clan Cheifs, Black Magics and Black Cats. Standing in splendid isolation are a row of Claret Bumbles and Hare's Ear thingys.
Gay up here does not start till the summer months and not at all in Yell.
Am I missing something, apart from the obvious?

No mate, those hot pant wearing lady boy flies are all summer flies, like you say. Don't be fooled, stick with the black for early on.

I would say you cant beat black but you definetley need some with some colour.
A yellow tailed muddler works well quite early infact quite a lot of them do also flies with a good bit of green.
It will depend on what lochs you are fishing and what the water quality is looking like.

Me too Hilloch,in fact on my usual haunts black reigns supreme all season long.My boxes are crammed with black and claret,I'm not needing to tie any more of them.Ive been tying gaudier stuff in order to expand my collection with daphnia feeders in mind and a holiday trip in summer to look forward to.

Hilloch you could get some black claret then you would have some colour in the box

The colour black in seals fur I think the light effects the fur and it makes one look to water, light and fur.
I tie all my sugar cubes with black foam the fish come to the fly easily and it does not spook them but I prefer to fish them blind which is my choice.
Nearly all early fishing is on black Lures.

There is one thing I would add to black and all colours many years ago I started looking at the materials through a cheap microscope this opened my mind for instance 35yrs ago I was matching peacock herl with silver holo which I bought from Calabra's in the USA it was not available in this country, also we have to think about water colour like peat stained and what it does to black there seems to be all sorts of colours that we can blend with black.
