Default questions

I am in the process of tying up some czech nymphs,i have been useing thin lead wire to cover the whole shank to just around the bend now,am i right in assuming that this will make it sink upside down by that i mean hook shank first then hook point? Now whilst looking at the many tyers on youtube tying the czech nymph they say you can use a tungsten bead instead of the lead wire were would you place the bead on the hook or does it not matter just put it behind the eye? thank you

Hello Horses,

your leaded nymph will sink upside down indeed. As for the tungsten, your choice : if you want it to stick out against the body mount it against the eye. If you want to hide it, place it on the thorax and put some dubbing over. Personally I wouldn't hide an expensive tungsten bead just to add weight you can achieve with lead wire or sheet. What's more, a bead (2,8/3.3 mm) will always thicken the thorax area and thus create more resistance in the water. Czech nymphs should be as slim as possible to sink fast. My sink nymph on a Czech train is just coiled 1 mm lead wire on a hook coated with a fine coloured latex layer. Sometimes I will even use a combination of a (double!) tungsten bead head and a leaded body to get down in the most turbulent streams.

Regards,
Johan
