Question Help with sea trout box ?

Hi Guys

Ive never "targeted" sea trout and fancy trying it on the River Carron (Fawkirk)

Im after help in tying up a wee box for small river sea trout

This in mind:

What flys day ?

What flys night ?

What sizes ?

What hooks should i use ?

Reckon ive alot to learn they seem almost "Mythical" creatures !!

Don't over complicate catching sea trout with boxes full of flies. You only need a couple of patterns in various sizes, and fish them with confidence. Spend half the night with your head in a fly box because there are fish showing all over but you get hit them is a guaranteed route to failure. I only use 2 or 3 patterns all season, black and yellow tube, butcher variant tube, and this, which has accounted for quite a few double figure sea trout and is consistently my most successful pattern, and NEVER off the dropper.

GP tail, gold oval rib, gold tinsel body, red cock throat, crow wing, JC on a salar 8 or 10.

Day flies high water.

Make them bulky and bright - I like orange and pink marabou flies with rubber legs. They'd look more at home ruddering on Rutland.

Day flies low water water.

Think trout flies. small nymphs and wets and sometimes dries work well. I've had a fair number of good seatrout on size 14 and 16 Hare's Ear nymphs.

Night flies

The nearer they are to the sea the better the bright silver flies work in my experience locally. Dark flies fished slow and deep can work. Also have a couple of wake flies - I use cork bass bugs but a greased muddler is a good option.
Tie flies with a few strands of luminous material. If things are slow shine a torch on the flies to brighten them up. Sometimes it gets you a fish.

Black and silver ruined for night fishing. Various weights, various lengths. Use the smaller flies on the dropper.
