Smile Starting up

Hiya

To all you experienced fly tying folk out there, I have two questions. What is and where is the best place to buy a complete fly tying kit? I've been tying for some time, but no longer have any of the kit that my ex-husband and I built up over the years together!

I'm also looking to buy a load of Kamasan 175's, size 10 an 12?

Cheers

probably best to buy just the kit you need for the flies you use. Most kits will have a lot of materials you will never use.
kamasans from OReilleys £6 per 100 boxed

All the best Nick

I started tying years ago but only bought what i needed for the patterns at the time.

I now have boxes, and boxes of materials some are even saftley bagged up and have not looked at them for years.

Fly tying kits are ok, but you will find you will not use half of the materials.

Have a look on the forum, i am sure some one can help you.

I tied flies years and years ago then drifted away from tying then came back to it. When I came back I bought a lureflash kit for about £40 which I thought was a pretty good idea at the time.

Through using this forum and becoming aware of the better quality materials which are available I 've come to the conclusion the kit was a waste of money as I've given away stuff and still have stuff which I can't use due to poor quality.

The replies above are good advice and what I would add is try and decide what kind of flies you want to tie i.e. Rainbow lures or traditional, dries wets etc,. Draw up a list of what flies you want to tie, find out what materials you need and then take it from there by maybe posting your requirements on this thread or another. Even if you don't know what materials you need, if you post the flies you want to tie, folk will help you out.

It was the same story for me as Black-Don's post.

Now a couple of years down the line, I have feathers that I've no idea what to do with.

Decide the patterns, then buy the materials, top advice.

Hi Red tag.
I only started tying at the beginning of this year and had the same dilemma (although I had no previous experience).
I spoke to Chris at Lathkill as he was quite local to me. He would not recommend "kits" but did invite me up to his place I told him what flies I would be attempting to tie and he sold me the Materials and tools I needed with no over selling. So I would suggest that sort of approach

Some good advice here Redtag, I also have bought the Lureflash kit but have since realised i don't need half the stuff in there so that was a waste of money so avoid the material kits.
