Default Advice for a new tyer :)

just started tying my own for use on reservoirs and a small river.
After a looong and late night practicing the whip finish by hand (which took far, far longer than i though it would) I actually got started on some flies today ( Deer Hair tadpoles and Mini Cat's Whisker Lures). Can anyone advise me on some other easy patterns to tie and the materials for them? Also what is the best online store to purchase materials from for an affordable price ?
Thanks,

Ed

Black and peacock spider. Peacock herl and black hen hackle.

Choose simple flies to start with to avoid frustration and acceptable results. Kind of like walk before you run. Perservere and you will improve with practice.
I wish you well.

muddlers, cormorants, cats whiskers, humungus, yellow dancers, wooly buggers
they should get you started, easy cheap and you use the same type of materials for them and a load more..
deer hair, marabou, hackle, dubbing, peacock hearl, fritz, ribbing..
look these up on the sbs section or youtube for the tying

Hello Ed,
Good advise given above. Also have a look here http://www.flyforums.co.uk/fly-tying-step-step/The Step By Steps created by members are very useful.

Learn to tie this fly and you will be able to tie hundreds of others. It teaches:
  1. making a bed of thread,
  2. tying in a tail,
  3. dubbing fur to make a body,
  4. ribbing with the thread,
  5. tying in a hackle for a dry fly,
  6. winding the hackle and
  7. you get to practice your whip finish.
That list makes it possible for you then to tie any fur bodied fly, any hackled fly, you make the variety by changing the colour of the materials.

Where do you live ? It might be worth seeing if there is a local fly dressers guild.

This is very good advice, in time you will also get the proportions of materials right as well.
