Default The colour 'purple'

Hi all,

was just wondering if anyone else has any success with flies with purple in them? There aren't too many well known purple patterns, but I'd be interested to hear other peoples views on using this colour in flies.

My old boss used to fish Carron dam with a pennell variant. It has a deep purple seals fur body and he swore by it. Some of the catches of wild brownies him and his boat partner had on it were scary!

More common a colour with salmon flies and it works well here.

Ah sorry Andy, I'd already tied that one up. Next one for sure OK.

Thanks for the info on the purple guys, I know it's used on spiders etc, but can't think of any traditional loch flies with purple in them. Shame too, that grizzle cape's a belter.

Very nice stuart, just the right amount, too much and you'll overpower it. Quite a few spiders use purple, snipe and purple as bruce mentioned, purple henthorn spider, fog black, welsh partridge uses purple seals fur, dark watchett to mention a few.

When I started tying flies and knew no better all my Mallard and Clarets were actually Mallard and Purples They seemed to catch well enough considering my limited angling skills at the time

Post Purple Buzzers

Talking to a chap at Tweeddale last week and he showed me some buzzers he had a bit success with, one was a size 12 B175, medium silver bead, Fluo purple floss ribbed with silver tinsel. He said he'd had great success with it early in the season. I tied a couple up using Pearsall's purple silk but when I varnished the finished fly it looked almost black, bought some Fluo purple floss and tied a fly and it takes the varnish without darkening too much and looked like the buzzer the chap showed me, so will give it a swim and see what happens.

Yep, as mentioned.. Snipe & Purple, and Kite's Imperial to name two distinguished purple patterns. Do they work because, or in spite of the purple though? A bit of both I reckon (like any other fly) but I do think that on certain days they can excel because of the purple. I've got a little theory about Purple/violet/Ultra-violet etc, but it's not sufficiently advanced enough to furnish you lot with! What I do feel sure about, is that there is hardly a colour under the sun that won't have it's day. Picking that day day is the trick though.. it's not always obvious, and the colour selection isn't always logical. You can be it will be logical to the fish though.. as far as I'm aware they don't do mind games.. they just eat and make little fish.

Nice tying and nice shots by the way, Pengs
