Default The Jassid

The Jassid has recently been brought to my attention, as a useful addition to the flybox. But there is little mention on this forum.

Have any members any information to give as to it's usefulness?

I have never heard of it before but I would think there are a lot of American patterns that I have not heard of.

Jassid flies tied to represent reed smuts or any small black flies, hope this helps B.

Have a wild guess mate A Vince Marinaro pattern, originally tied by him on a size 20. It's basically a black Griffiths Gnat, clipped on top, and covered with single JC nail. Designed to imitate reed smuts, tiny midge etc.

Not indigenous to UK which is maybe why you haven't seen it mentioned on this forum.

Not that it ever stopped an overseas pattern from being successful here, it's worked well for me for lough sea-trout in sizes which Marinaro never dreamt of (8s )

Never made this fly work, god knows I've tried.
Size 22 black Klink, a far better bet.

Or a bog standard F-Fly.

It used to be a very popular and effective fly tied in a size 20 on The Salisbury and District waters over 20 years ago when I was a member.

Use to have some tied up. black tying silk and used for the body, keep nice a slim, black cock hackle and a wing of starling wing feather with a lighter tip tied flat, extended over body the fly. Hook, small.
A small black gnat is as good as anything.
