Default Orkney Peach - Dye Question

I’ve read that Orkney peach should be a 50:50 mix of glo-brite 7 & 8 but I have a few capes from Gerry that are labeled as Orkney peach and to me they look very orange. I can dye materials to be a pretty close match to the glo-brite colour using a mixture of Jacquards golden yellow and golden ochre, but aren’t convinced that it is the right colour. My next try was going to be Veniards peach over-dyed with golden yellow to orange it up a bit, but I haven’t got the peach dye yet.

Does anyone have a dye recipe for an authentic Orkney peach?
A recipe for a nice coral would be good as well, is the Veniards one any good?

Cheers - Steve

Yeah I would be interested in this one as well Steve for future reference as I have plenty of it at the moment.
It definetly has a slightly orange look to it and if you have any dubbing it seems to have a mix of orange, red and yellow if I remember of the top of my head.
I have just got several of the Jaquards dye's so needing to have a play

Jacquard dont have a mixing colour chart available yet for acid dyes but you can use the following links which will give you a guide for what colours to mix etc. The Chart is for Procion MX fiber reactive dyes not Acid dyes, use only for reference purposes only.

Quite useful links those Ed. Judging from the Proxion MX mixings a weak bath of Golden Yellow will be a reasonable peach.

The mixing part of dyeing is really just trial and error on my part. I have messed about with Photoshop to try and predict results (or you can do it in Word). Here’s an example, base colour yellow, over-dye with grey gives olive. The ‘calibration’ of colours and transparency could take forever to get repeatable results though, but it gives an idea of what colours you need to be looking at.

However, I think my question should have been;

What colour is the real ‘Orkney Peach’ is it the mixture of Glo-brite 7 & 8 which I make to be somewhere around RHS 164C (on the left below) or the Artifly colour which I make to be RHS 32A (on the right below). Or something else entirely?

I matched the colours to the RHS colours by choosing the closest match in RGB values from sampled colours from photo’s so hopefully taking the monitor calibration and subjectivity issues out of the equation. I used the Azalea Society charts for the colours.

Default For Busbiegaz

Busbiegaz – Sorry I missed the answer to your post off my last one.

There have been quite a few posts on the forum about dying basics and Midlander has done an excellent introduction to dying SBS which will be linked in lots of threads. Have a search around.

Dyes? You need acid dyes for fur and feathers which basically boils down to 2 easy to obtain manufacturers, Veniards or Jacquards (there are others, Omega in the UK and Dharma Trading in the States etc.). Veniards have the advantage that the colours are orientated towards fly tying (as you would expect) the downside is that they are smaller and more expensive than Jacquard and the tops on the pots are virtually impossible to get off without spilling dye all over .

There are other ways, food colouring, hair dyes, turmeric and other natural products. For me though the acid dyes are straightforward and give good results.

A ‘recipe’ book would be great though, but too many people have secret shades

All the best - Steve

NO, I have it and it is just another version of orange as is their peach. To me they are too close together to buy each, better to use yellow, orange and red in overdying / mixing. The Veniard Peach dubbing is nothing like their Peach dye, the dye is much more orange, the dubbing is more like a pale ripe melon to me. Maybe even a sunburst that went to far to the pale red side.
Better to experiment with dying for short periods of time IMHO.

I have never touched Gerry's products, but the photographs of them look to me to have fluorescent dyes being used. And these shades look totally different from the Irish shades to me.... Some of the Irish shades do seem to match up closer to the Jacquards dyes.
Once again I want the rule book!!!
