Red face poor eyesight

hi everyone, at the end of last year thought i would have a try at tying flies
so bought a little bit of gear to have a try, even though i have done some lures and buzzers(caught first trout on own fly yesterday) finding very hard due to not very good eye sight even with my glasses on. any one had same problems.
any advice would be great, or should i just give it up as a`bad job.
thanks in advance
Barry.

You can get a magnifier that sits in front of the vice

Hi Barry,

I had perfect eyesight... until I hit 40. Then I needed reading glasses. Then bi-focals, then varifocals, then a stronger prescription, then stronger still... I turned 55 last November and have just got an even stronger prescription on my varifocals. They are perfect for reading, perfect for driving and perfect for watching TV... and almost everything else. The one thing they are hopeless for is tying flies. They do not focus close enough.

The absolutely perfect thing for tying flies is a pair of cheap and nasty reading glasses from off the stand in Boots, Asda, or wherever else you find them. May as well get the strongest available, which is usually x4 magnification. Should not cost more than £5. My optician said it was no problem using them and he could not compete with them for the job in question.

I agree with Col, Barry. They are ideal for tying, I usualy buy 5 pairs cause I tend to sit on them quite often.

I agree with above comments. Hey, don't quit no-no. My eyesight is spot on at anything over 1 metre. However, due to age I need reading glasses. For normal reading 2x mag is perfect but when I tie flies I have a pair of 3x mag. They are useless for reading, to strong and hurt my eyes, but for tying they are dead on. I get mine from the pound shop and although frail if you sit on them , work great to tie with.

I also have a magnifying lamp and at first thought it would be a boon. For me it is not. To fiddly, to much ar$ing about working in a small area. Good for surgeons I have no doubt, but my flies, as anyone will tell you, are not technical .

Up the mag on your specs and see the difference. Hth.

Chris.

Ha-ha, just posted this and seen the above about sitting on them, how can you see them if you are not wearing...ugh!

There also are magnifiers you wear over your regular glasses. I used 'em for a while, but then found that placing a plain, white card behind the fly was much more effective. The improvement in contrast really made a difference.

Well done on catching your first trout on your own tying, that should be enough incentive for you to keep at it.
