From what i've heard about them, the kits aren't really worth it.

You get alot of stuff in them that you will probably never use.

I would suggest getting some basic materials to tie some flies that you will use, a good pair of scissors, a cheap vice and other basic tools you will need to get started, bobbin holder etc, and build up from there.

I agree with Flyfisher 17. When I went back to fly fishing I ordered a kit from Glasgow Angling Centre and was quite disappointed. Yeah it was cheap, but didn't have much in it-cheap vise and tools, but not much else-not even instructions as to how to use it. My best buy was a pedestal vice and my wife loves me for it as my clamp vise kept scratching the dining room table. Couple hackle pliers, bobbins, bobbin threader, dubbing needle, tweezers for use with beads. As far as fur and feathers when you're starting out look for bulk packs as reputable suppliers stock them-John Norris of Penrith do lovely bulk packs of most materials and don't charge the earth either-then ask the forumites to post fly patterns to tie and I'm sure you'll get enough to keep you going a long time and you'll be absolutely delighted when that trout or whatever you're after takes the fly that You tied yourself! Note on hackles-genetic hackles are lovely, long and bred for fly tying, but Very expensive. For starting out indian' if you can still get them or chineses capes are good value and will probably last you your lifetime unless you take up commercial fly-tying and then you can AFFORD the more expensive stuff!
I'm a pensioner tying just for myself and a few friends and I have a Few genetic capes, but that will do me fine and I doubt I'll ever use them up in my life time-however long that will be!

find what materials you need for ,say the 6 flies you use the most and start by buying these and perfect their tying, You can then start building your repetoir and material collection

all the best Nick

Remember that the Step by Step list in our flytying section is very good.
