Default Dyna-King Squire

I am in the market for a quality fly tying vice and have had my sights set on a Dyna-King Squire. It would seem to be a fairly basic but well made vice. Am I right or should I consider any other vices in the same price range and with a similar specification?

I don't think DynaKing make bad vices
If you stick with them or the likes of Renzetti or Weaver you won't go far wrong.

I have a Squire and find it to be very good indeed - I would whole-heartedly recommend.
I think Lakeland do them a little bit cheaper than elsewhere - I got mine for about £125.

Taimen stock some Dyna King models, though sadly not the Squire, which I think is a well made basic vice, but not cheap.

Taimen have the Barracuda Junior for just over £150, see:

If you can afford the Barracuda Junior (probably the Junior Trekker) then that will give you a lot more features than the Squire. It isn't a huge ammount more so if you can I would go for it.

Which ever you will probably want the midge jaws to go with the vice. I would recomend getting the clamp version with an extension as this is the only way you'll be able to set the vice at the correct height. Pedistal is great but you end up sawing the legs down on your table to get the right height. Then your legs will not go under the table. Bight the bullet and do it right from the start.

Cheers
Alan.

Sound advice from Mr B again.

I would highly recommend getting a Dyna-King. Build quality is superb, and it will give you many years of service. I got a set of midge Jaws for mine and haven't looked back.

Lakeland is probably your best bet. I think they are one of the biggest stockists of D-K in the uk so he should have what your looking for. With regards to the Clamp and extension arm I would also highly recommend. If you are sitting at your bench for 3hrs tying flies, the last thing you want is to have sore shoulders because you can't the height adjusted.

i would strongly recommend the voyager 2 or barracuda - i started out with the squire but the inability to alter the head angle eventually got very frustrating - the clamp model voyager 2 was relatively cheap -under $200 delivered which is almost in budget.

Anyone who is in the market for a mid range fly tying vice MUST take a look at the The new Snowbee Waldron Vice.

The jaws (really the only important bit) are Lawrence Waldron designed and Waldron vices are reckoned to be the finest vices in the world.

A little judicious Googling should get you one for less than 170 pounds, and it is a rotary too.

(no connection with either Snowbee or Lawrence Waldron)

I looked at the Squire myself but in the end went for the Voyager 2, its a great vice and as others have said has that bit of extra flexibility that the Squire doesn't. A quality bit of kit

I've been using a Dyna King Supreme for 5 years, still as good as new. When I bought it (in USA) the guy said 'Congratulations on the last vice you'll ever buy', and I think he was absolutely correct.
