I'm no photographer so not the best person to put you right but the pic seems out of focus to my dodgy eyes.

Have to agree, the fly is out of focus and the lighting isn't right, a lot of reflection coming back of the fly.

Hi Gaz, what's the camera? I presume you've got a manual? Lets get straight into 'Macro' (usually symbolised with a wee flower/magnifying glass icon) mode... Fly about 5 inches away from the camera.... fly and camera rock solid... use the timer to fire the shot. Lets establish your optimum focusing distance before worrying about light.

busbiegaz, what camera are you trying out?
Wife bought me a Kodak Playgo Sport. It's a video camera that also takes stills, unfortunately, it does not have any macro mode. It can be placed underwater to take video pic or stills, it does not however focus in on a fly or other small items After viewing the thread on photographing flies under water, I thought I would give this camera a go. There is a minmum focusing distance but this is way too far from the fly even after zooming in. The guy who started the thread said his camera wanted to focus on any bits on the glass tank he used, my idea was to put the camera in the water, hence solve that problem. Back to the drawing board and manual focus.

The camera is fully automatic. Been trying to work out what part of the fly in your above pic the camera focused on. You may have the camera too near the fly, a bit of trial and error should see it corrected by moving the camera a bit at time away from the fly and see what comes out best. I also take it that the camera's flash is auto and thats why there is a lot of reflacted light of the fly, again could be due to the closeness of the camera to the fly. If you get the fly in focus but still have trouble with the flash, just put a peice of tissue paper over the flash and see what happens.

Good luck.
