Aye, the wing is blue mallard - I used the very last bit of usable blue, so the black tip is creeping in - skinflint!
It was a tricky lighting job to get it to show up well - the first attempts made it look like crow - nearly black.
The thing with blue mallard, and peacock (blue neck, herl, etc), magpie tail, teal wing and so on... is that the colour is not pigment, but colours created by the light being bent and twisted by the molecular structure of the feathers - butterflies and many fish do it too - how about a neon tetra?
When you come to photograph it, you set it up with the light coming from a different angle to where you are seeing it from - and the whole thing changes
To get maximum blue from it, you need the light to be coming from your own view point. And there is a bloody great lump of camera in the way. So, you need to bring the light in from an angle. Good challenge for anyone who fancies it - get a really top notch photo of a butcher.
