Default Beginners Thread

Don't know if this has been done before but what about a beginners " thread " with some of our more experienced tyer's putting up a standard pattern for beginners/newcomers to follow/try/post their pic's and then receive helpful critique ?

Maybe a standard pattern posted with a week or two week interval for folk to try their hand at and then receive some comments before a new standard pattern is presented.

What do you think ?

I'd be more than happy to see someone get the ball rolling.

Thumbs up Great idea.

I would welcome that especially dries never really tried them except some wee spiders especially tying posts etc.

I try to follow step by steps.

Most beginners would only have a basic kit to cover the flies they are intrested in tying so it might be an idea to have 2 or 3 different patterns to cover the different styles of fishing...ie, Stillwater, river, Lochs etc.

Just my two penneth' worth

Mick.

Mick, good point.

Rather than using 2 or 3 patterns and in the vein of trying to use a standard which was universal, I was thinking of kicking the thread off with something like a Black Spider .

A truly universal " standard " which can be used on small stillwater's, lakes, Lochs and rivers to catch Bows and Broonies alike. One of my biggest bows was caught on a BS.

I'd imagine most tyers would have some black thread and a Cock or Hen hackle in their box.

Default Useful

As a newby I would find this very useful and will participate once I've set up means of posting photos.
It would also be useful to know how you fish these patterns effectively.
Tying my first fly was great, a black buzzer.
When I learned how to use it it was magical.

Good choice BD.
Black spider followed by
pennell
black and peacock spider
red tag
priest spider.
diawl bach

materials would be
Black thread
black floss
silver rib
silver tinsel
peacock herl
black and ginger hackles
tippets
seals fur
some off cuts of wool can be used to change the tails

Sounds like a good idea and should give beginners more confidence in posting flies on here. Would this involve an SBS or would you have to try and get the patterns tying instructions from a book or online reources like youtube etc?
