Default Muddler Medley

3 Muddlers.

The top 2 are tied using pheasant tail and grey squirrel for the wing and tail, the bottom is tied to the original recipe using grey squirrel for the underwing with mottled turkey for the tail and wing.

Mini Muddler

They're all tied on no. 10 B175's as opposed to longshank hooks and I like to keep the heads a bit rough and ready but they could be trimmed any way you like. I try to tie my muddlers with baitfish in mind but don't mind trying out different colours. The one's above would most probably represent small to medium size natural minnows.

Very nice BD. I've never fished muddlers and thought, before reading your write up, really good Sedges

Cheers, much appreciated coming from somewhat of a Muddler connoisseur.

The original Don Gapen pattern was tied to imitate a " Slimy Sculpin ", a small minnow like bottom dwelling fish. When I tie mine I try to keep baitfish in mind but there's no doubt, depending on how you dress them, they can imitate a variety of fish and small insects found in and around the water.

They're a really versatile pattern, again depending on how they're tied, you can fish them deep, just off the bottom, mid level in the water, sub-surface and even as a dry fly. There's no doubt when fished as a dry they could easily be taken for a sedge a moth a cricket or even a small mouse in larger sizes . Some folk fish them as out and out lures merely to provoke the natural aggressiveness in a trout.

Bows, browns, blues, rainbows, steelhead, pike and even Salmon will hit these flies which are truly versatile.
