The original Don Gapen pattern was tied to imitate a " Slimy Sculpin ", a small minnow like bottom dwelling fish. When I tie mine I try to keep baitfish in mind but there's no doubt, depending on how you dress them, they can imitate a variety of fish and small insects found in and around the water.
They're a really versatile pattern, again depending on how they're tied, you can fish them deep, just off the bottom, mid level in the water, sub-surface and even as a dry fly. There's no doubt when fished as a dry they could easily be taken for a sedge a moth a cricket or even a small mouse in larger sizes

. Some folk fish them as out and out lures merely to provoke the natural aggressiveness in a trout.
Bows, browns, blues, rainbows, steelhead, pike and even Salmon will hit these flies which are truly versatile.
