Default Fly Tying Magpie Syndrome

Defined as spotting substances which one suddenly imagines might be good for tying flies from, and feeling compelled to acquire them. And then to make flies out of them, possibly of dubious merit

While shopping for Christmas decorations, I spotted a bag of what I can only describe as holographic angel hair:

I was on it like a stockie at a blob. Later, at home, I discovered that it is quite coarse, stiff stuff, not very promising, but eventually thought that maybe it could be layered in a wing like deerhair. With a bit of SH brushed through it to stiffen it up, it might have some potential for SWFF, pike or perch fishing, maybe:

Next discovery was that the wife was picking over an item of clothing which had been washed too many times and was shedding lycra fibres. She was pulling these fine, brown, rubbery fibres off it and making a little pile of them. She noticed me eyeing it, and had me sussed out - "are you thinking of making flies out of that stuff?"

Busted.

I give you, neat or with a little hare's ear in the dubbing, the Gold Ribbed Wife's Bra:

It's an affliction. I may need to seek help.

Definitely an affliction we all suffer with. One tends to look at everyday items in an entirely different manner

Yes - I have the same affliction - I've tried the Xmas stuff - found the serrated edges a bit off-putting. You've made a better job of using it than me - maybe I should give it a second chance!

I don't half get strange looks as I search through the nail varnish and haberdashery departments. I get aked if I need "help" a lot.
must be the sling back shoes that give it away....

I know the feeling. The kids were most disgusted at the fact that when the cat brought in a recent kill I was eyeing it up for potential fly tying material. I did not even say anything, they could just tell from the look I was giving it.

Now I just need to train the cat to go after the blue jays that land in the garden from time to time.

Cheers - must admit, I was quite surprised at how well it dubs even without any fur, and the nice soft leggy effect.
