Default Would you like a feature for flies to be rated by members?

I know this was asked for a while back - but there seemed to be a mixed reaction. Our sister forum in the US has implemented this here:

Fly Patterns - The North American Fly Fishing Forum

If you also wanted this I could set up for you - under a new forum in this section?

What think please?

Thanks

Colin

Sorry Colin, but I'm not even gonna look at it. I might puke. Another Americanism no doubt, and an excuse for a load of back slapping and all that pish. 'Rating'? What's all that about? If someone rates something, or doesn't, they can say it with words with our wonderful language instead of sticking a bloody badge or a star on it. Besides, one man's meat is another man's poison.

Maybe you could think up some system to list and categorise members patterns though, and let folk add constructive thoughts and observations, rather than a little star?

There is the option to do this in the Gallery. Someone rated one of my buzzers '1' I can only assume they missed the '0' from the end.

Scratch..this won't be a pissing match between us as usual..

however, I have to agree with what you have stated, for I too have no real great admiration on how the Americans like to "get pats on their backs"..or boost on how good they really are, which is an eye opener to a lack of insecurities they have.
..only one good thing about the proposal that I can see which in threads posted by members in here already do and that is giving constructive statements to those that do post their flies..and as you have already stated..to have this section constructed as you suggested would be a better idea then "pinning the tail on the donkey"!

I agree that its is just an American back slapping exercise to rate flies in this manner. I also think that it could turn out to be a bit off putting for budding fly tyers who post their flies for constructive criticism rather than a points rating. If somebody was to be getting low ratings on his efforts they might just turn arround and throw in the towel and give up altogether.the present format is fine. Why mess arround and change it?

One of the most stupid ideas I have heard in a while

It would only serve to put some people of posting their flies on here in particular the new tiers for fear of getting a "low mark"

We don't put flies on here to get one up on each other , to score points over someone else , to have our egos stroked etc etc .. It is all about sharing and bouncing ideas about isn't it ??

Constructive criticism is one thing but to grade and mark the flies ?? PLEASE !!

Does it really matter what we think anyway as we will most likely get up one morning and log on here only to find it has been done anyway ????

So in a word ..NO !!

Will I now have some of my "special points" taken away that I was so kindly given this morning even though I/We never asked for that either

Its a bit junior school gold star rewards isn't it? I as some of you might know post one or two flies on here from time to time but only for criticism from other members as I'm not always sure if my tying is going in the right direction, i.e. forward and not backward. There are some excellent tiers on here who have alot more knowledge than I on the subject and who can offer suggestions for proper technique and point out certain areas that might need improving. I am not posting just for someone to say 'great fly' etc etc although I am always flattered when this does occur and it makes my head just that little bit bigger, but rather for members to point out inadequacies in the fly and different ways of doing things as this is how I improve and gauge my progress. So any kind of criticism, good or bad is always constructive criticism, in my book anyway.

Cant agree more, I have only been tying since Father Christmas bought me a few goodies. Just starting to think of putting a few efforts on hear as the more experianced of you seem to give fair criticsm without taking the pi** out of us newbbies. I certently would not post any of my poor efforts if I thought the were going to be scored

The nymph comp was humiliating enough - there's no way I'd want to get a big fat zero for everything I post!

There are enough people on here who tell it as it is. If you post a fly and ask for constructive abuse er i mean criticism you'll get it. No need for a score IMHO.
