Default Mayfly USD

Could have done with a better shaped hook to pull this one off and poly yarn cut a bit short but not bad.

To my untrained eye Mark, that looks very nicely tied.
I would have put either a larger hackle on or splayed wings a bit like rollcast has to keep it afloat, but hey what do I know, 9 out of 10 M.

Mark, next time you do them, try making the body shorter so that the tail(s) alight on the surface rather than sitting above it. That will aid flotation very considerably. If you change your rib to dark brown flexi-floss (stretched) that won't do any harm either & it'll be nearer the natural's colour. Perhaps a few more turns of hackle might be worth consideration. Apart from that you have a the makings of a real killer pattern there.

Thanks steven and arkle for the advice. I think I need to understand this pattern a bit better in order for me to carry it off to its full potential. I'm a bit puzzled as to why the thorax cover is on the opposite side to the wing and the wing is coming out of the thorax on what would be the underbody, it kind of feels like i'm driving a car forward looking thru the rear view mirror. ijust think it would look better with the wing coming out of the thorax cover and the hook still being inverted the same.....or maybe I don't understand the idea of what the fly is trying to achieve in relation to different stages of the hatch....erm

Hi Wingman,

You are basically just tying the fly upside down so the thorax cover is not really that at all - its just referrred to as such for convenience. It is actually the underside of the fly and its purpose is to divide the hackle which is actually the most important elemnet in this type of fly.

When tied with the hackle divided with the 'thorax cover' the only way the fly can rest is 'upside down', (i.e. with the hook point in the air) because this is the only flat point on which it can rest. And the wing acts as a bit of a parachute (I think) helping the fly come down with the hook point in the air rather than the other way round which would be favoured otherwise.

Hope that's some clarity for you!

Andy

Mark the tails are 3 strands of dyed black bucktail that have been cut so they are similar thicknesses and lengths and then just split with fig of 8 turns

I thought it was bucktail Al, looks quite effective.

Thanks Andy that clears that up a bit, I think I see the thinking behind it now, probably with the hook being inverted threw me a bit.

cheers
