Default Whip finishing tool

I quite often have cuts on my fingers that make whip finishing awkward, right now I have one in just the wrong place. I've never used one, but am considering buying a tool, just for such times.I notice pro tyers often use one, so assume there is an advantage ? The only disadvantage in finger whipping seems to be the aforementioned snagging of thread on cuts/rough skin, and dropping the dubbing needle I use to draw the loop tight! A quick search revealed the Matarelli is well thought of, but £16 seems excessive compared to a fiver for the Davie McPhail tool, which I presume works well.Anyone use the DMcP model?

I picked a matarelli lookalike up on ebay for a few quid and it worked well until the end bit dropped off after a few days of use, but I supaglued it back on and its been great eversince. That probably doesn't help you in the slightest but there are WF tools out there that look and work just like the matarelli but alot cheaper.

Hi I just started using one and was surprised how quickly you can pick it up, i bought a size large venards for £3 it rotates but some people like the arm to be fixed. i would suggest that you buy a cheap one and see how you get on.. Best of luck..

Veniards do a cheap version of the Materelli at around 3 quid....I have been using the same one for years without any problems, and up until recently I tied thousands of flies per year.

As I'm left handed which most people aren't the only one I could get on
with was the peitijean one.. As far as the others go basic ones are all
very similar. With regards using one if your right handed have a look
on youtube, If your left don't do what I did and copy rather than reversing
what I was seeing it took me ages to work that out

So am I,..... And Youtube was many years off of invention when I first started using my cheapo Materelli copy....Took a bit of working out from the written instructions Veniards included with the tool back then, but looking at recent Youtube instructional videos utilising the Materelli Type, I can't see a problem in picking it up, whether you be left or right handed
