Default not enough

I have been tying now for a few years and i was wondering have you ever looked at the finished fly and thought "thats not enough material" i have,so i thought instead of stripping it down i would put them in the fly box and give them a swim and i was amazed how well the smallest amount of colour on a fly really.really stands out in the water, some colours more than others and they do catch fish so next time you tie a fly and it looks as though you have not put enough material on it dont strip it down or bin it give it a go i think you will be pleasantly suprised.

Yes I agree sparse flies catch fish. Lots of flies are tied to look good for the angler, the fish aren't bothered

Well when I used to go fishing with my grandad he'd fish partridge and orange spiders all the time just like my great grandfather did and I'd look at them with their sparseness of fine hackles and think why does he fish those poor excuses for flies, while I would be fishing a flashy wickhams fancy or something big and bold that I was sure the trout would be fighting over that I'd tied a day earlier and was 'the killer'. But guess who caught all the trout?

Hi I have been tying for many years now and i prefer to tie my flies sparsely and they have always worked well for me, last season i won the TAFI Irish nationals on Corrib with a sparse Green Peter Daddy.

From my experience in fly tying which is just a keen amateur I have always been of the opinion that less is more.

Once offered a mate of mine a choice of two flies to fish for his first day of fly fishing on a small lake.........A Green Drake and a small orange spider ......He picked the Green Drake, so i fished with the spider. Beat Him 5-- 0 i think he went into shock.

The spider was size 14, orange thread as a body and 2 turns of orange hackle......I still have, and fish these type of flies to-day......so give the sparse efforts a go you may be surprised....they could be your best ones..

All the best Tony........

My uncle who was the bailiff on Porth reservoir many moons ago introduced me to the sparsely tied fly!! He used to say here try this, after I had spent a few hours blanking on butchers and peters, I would ask whats that for god sake!! the answer came! "a little bit of nothing" caught next cast if i remember right.
