Default spider patterns

could someone tell me on what type of water still/river should you fish spider patterns please?
I only ask because I only fish Ressies normally(Farmoor/waltamstow) & am quite new to fly tying but would like to know if it`s worth tying a few?
Leo

I'm no expert on spiders as i fish stillwaters,i believe they are used on streams and rivers for trout and possibly grayling.I suppose they may work on stillwater, the only way to find out would be to tie a few and give them a go

Hi
Mainly rivers but they work well on some stillwaters so yes always give them a try.

Try to get hold of this book all you need to know about spiders on stillwaters

Yup you should be fishing the larger spiders on stillwaters size 10's or 12's also smaller ones are useful when hatches of midges are on the go.

Hi Leo,

Try a Black & Peacock spider with a gold bead head & a fluorescent lime, or orange tag in size 12. It does the bizz for me mate

Depends on your definition of spider but a cruncher is very popular on reservoirs

All the best Nick

And another vote from me. I find the Stewart style just the ticket when rainbows are midging just sub surface.
