Looking for recommendations from fellow forumites as to what make and model hook they favour in this big size. Looking to tye up a 'May' box or two with them.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Cheers

B175 for me

Used to be B170 but I and others I know had some issue with them straightening from time to time .

Depends on the pattern you are going to tie Chris and how you will fish them . For example heavy dressed Wulff type jobs are fine on the 175 . I have not had a problem with any pattern tied on them as I don't leave the fly on the water more than a few seconds so it doesn't get a chance to sink .
I find the extra weight makes the fly side nice and low .
If you want the fly to sit high and up on the water then I guess a lighter hook would be in order .

Thats what works for me and the situations I find myself in . If you are not going to meet any really big lumps then no need for the heavy hook .

You also have the option of using something like a B100/110 or equivalent for detached body patterns , although if doing this I don't use a large size hook .#12 or maybe #10.

Hi Loopy

I generally use lure hooks, preferably with straight eyes in those sizes and size 6 for mayflies.

Partridge D3ST, or YK12ST
Sprite Hand Made Hooks CARP, or TROUT DOWN EYE (not lure hooks)
Ashima F-30 (also down eyed)
Mustad 79706 (also down eyed)

There are others but they are no longer available. Try a few with straight eyes, you may find, like I do, that they hook a little better.

Aye Danny, slightly longer in the shank...heres a well chewed pattern dressed on it to give you an idea of the proportions.

No problems with this hook at all, even on decent fish. These are Corrib fish taken on dry mayflies fished on #5 and 6 weight outfits.

Dependant on the style of tying you are doing either a b400 or a b160 for detatched bodies.

Nice one cheers for that . Lovely fish there as well

What is becoming clear from this thread though is that like most things in fishing it is horses for courses , each to their own etc etc ....

I just got some Mustad signature dry fly hooks based on a recommendation on here, they look to be just what I need, a bit heavier than the Kamasan B400 but much stronger, nowhere near the weight of a B175. Decent gape too (bigger than a B170)

Your eminences thank you for your suggestions I will be buying a box of each of your favourites and will commence tying.

In the meantime MOT do you have a pic of your Mustard hook?

Thank you for your replies.
