Default Fly tying wax

Hi All, fly tying waxes should they be hard or soft, bees wax ,or parrifin wax,or a blend of waxes. There is also a nice textured wax surrounding cheese. Which is best? Over to you folks!

We were always taught to pull the thread firmly through hard wax rather than soften the wax. The heat generated (rope burn) is enough to melt the wax on to the thread.

Black cobbler's wax for me. Googled and got some from a bagpipe factory last year.

Just looked up the website of the Edinburgh Bagpipe Company thinking I'd just pop in and buy some... turns out the shop is in... East Sussex!

Is the stuff they sell the modern "blue" hued black, or the traditional "brown" hued black? I'm looking for stuff to stain the thread on a greenwell's glory and finding the modern black wax too dark.
