Default A few from the Greenwells Family

I have to admit been fascinated by this family of flies, What really fascinates me is the many styles in which it has been tied to be fished in different ways.

These are only a small number of them.

Simple spider - reasonably sparse - Dark Furnace or greenwells hackle depending on what you are imitating.

Simple spider - slighty heavier dressed hackle

Mike Connors - softwing

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterhen wing under or over covert
Thorax: A small ball of hares ear & body guards , stroked downwards with velcro

Mike Connors - softwing, emerger , larger throax to sit a wee bit longer in the meniscus

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterhen wing under or over covert
Thorax: A large ball of hares ear & body guards, stroked downwards with velcro

Mike Connors - softwing with split wing on websters style, though using soft coverts from waterhen.

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterhen wing under or over covert
Thorax: A decent ball of hares ear & body guards, stroked downwards with velcro. This I hope will present a very tasty and vulnerable emerger - and HOPE is a wonderful thing ;D

looks a bit of a dogs dooda in the picture, not quite so bad in reality. Whether the loose wing of soft coverts performs better or worse or just differently than the more solid wing styles using the primaries or secondaries remains to be tested.

Norm, nice flies as ever.

Greenwells Spider is so easily forgotten - so many writers and dvd's etc dont mention it as often as they should.

Re the meniscus etc, as i was saying by pm, i tried fishing Snipe and Yellow as a dry/damp at the end of last season on the lightest hook i could find ( 103bl , Tiemco ) , and using watershed after tying, plys hares thorax. I also applied a pinhead of gink.

Results - lethal - cant wait to tie a few more and try them.

Incidentally, whats waterwing - and is it needed ?

The damp spiders make sense so much in terms of vulnerability, they land lightly, look half dead and drowned , could even cover for spinners in some ways. I may even try a few with a clipped cdc thorax rather than hare or squirral? ATB, Spider
