Default Sharpie pens

I have just watched Davie McPhail's 'bugbond quilled buzzer' video on YouTube, and he uses Sharpie pens to colour the wingbuds and body, which gave a great, subtle effect. Are Sharpie pens particularily good for this purpose, or are any permanent markers o.k? Not having either orange or red markers I tried an orange highlight pen- the effect was so subtle it was non-existent.I see Sharpies for sale on Ebay, shall I click now or are they (or a good substitute) easily available on the high street?

Most waterproof/permanent markers will do the job to a greater or lesser degree. It makes no difference where you buy them from. Some are better for some jobs than others might be, I'm afraid it's often a matter of trial & error.

Sharpie pens are easily avaialable, W. H. Smiths sell them as well as other outlets. They are not expensive.

There are also Pantone pens which are obtainable through craft shops but these tend to be more expensive but come in a wide range of more subtle colours as well as the fluro colours.

The pens can be used for hot spots on buzzers and for colouring feathers, hackles etc. I use a brown pen on grey mallard feathers to give a passable version of bronze mallard. OK if you can't get the real thing.

Bruce, I haven't been called Codhead since my schooldays- I was born with a grey/brown mottled, clammy, skin, and a barbel whisker under my lip. Thanks to surgery I now look more normal, but still have panic atacks when I pass a fish and chip shop.

Thanks for the replies, I'll get a Sharpie as that's what Davie uses. I have three of the Pantones I use on fry patterns but they cost me dear.

so now your more like a "coalie" then , i have both sharpie and the ones in the link ,only problem i find with sharpies is they dont seem to "set" properly on material/feathers etc and rub off/wash out quite easily ?? obviously wont if varnished over, if your not getting the full colour when applying try a dab of tippex or similar to brighten the colour when applied on top of it ??

Staples sell arange of 10 different colour sharpie pens for about 11 pounds and if you are self employed they are tax deductable [not that anyone would want to rip off our good friends at inland revenue]

All the best Nick
