Thumbs up Big short shank hooks- small fly

Hi Guys

I wonder how many of you tie small flys i.e size 16,14,12 on large short shank hooks ??

The Kamasan B160 seems ideal for this purpose, my eyes were opened to this by a forum member who gave my a pattern (mums the word ) tied on a "HUGE" size 6 B160 yet its not any longer than a size 10 B175. The benefit being you get a very nice big gape and therefore theoretically better hook ups.

Example below are two Black PTN nymphs the bottom one tied on a size 14 nymph hook it proved deadly on the river fished Czech nymph style last season. I decided to top up my fly box for next season with this pattern.

How ever ive added peacock glister dubbing collar instead of black seal fur on last season version to jazz it up a bit but this time its tied on a B160 size 10 ! Yet the fly is the same size but with a much better gape.

Yes just like those Han's, lovely ties there

My wife cant understand why the fish cant see the hook ??

I tried to explain to her they dont know what a hook is, it doesnt register in their mermory bank.

They simply see the fly part i.e something they eat on a regular basis, luckily for us

I too subscribe to the big gape / short shank idea.

I find it especially suited to beadheaded flies.

Can you only get the barbless wide gape from the States or is there a Kamasan equivalent? I think I have seen these in coarse fishing tackle shops.
