Default Partridge and yellow spider

Thought I'd have a go at one of these for a change, tied on a size 16 hook.

Nice effort, the body is dressed a little long.. i think a consequence of using a short shanked hook pattern

Default Killer fly

Hi Wingman

Last season was my first on the River, i tied up Partridge & Orange and Partridge & Yellow.......................

The P & Y beat the pants off the P & O ! Most season i fished it 4' above a black pennell on a 10' leader of 3lb maxima. I found it worked particularly well when olives were on the water.

Heres mine that took alot of fish last season:

Hook: B175 14# (barb crushed )

Thread: Uni Yellow 8/0

Hackle: Partridge

Simple ..................deadly

For me it proved far more deadly than the Partridge and orange anyone else found this .....???????

Hi Englander,

try the orange with a brown partridge feather, works for me though i find it picks up a lot of chub during the summer months.

Nice fly there englander, my grandad used to swear by a p&o and thats who I first learned that fly from, in fact the first fly I ever knew, his flybox was full of them all different sizes. Interesting that you find the p&y more effective. I think I prefer these tied on longer hooks, I'm not sure the shorter shanks suits this style of fly, I think originally they could have been tied on straight eyed hooks but not sure, I think the browner partridge hackles you get more on the hen birds.

Like that short shank version wingman, I wouldn't consider that body too short for that hook which looks like a fulling mill short shank special.

If you wanted to be a stickler for trditional spider patterns you would be tying these on a partridge captain hamilton YL3A dry fly hook.

I love the simplicity of spider patterns, less is more
