Default The Classics: GRHE nymph

THE GRHE NYMPH

The gold ribbed hares ear or GRHE is one of the oldest flies around. No one is sure who first thought of the idea to use a hares mask to make such a killer fly. Although today a GRHE is mainly looked upon as a nymph, there are records of it (centuries ago) being referred to as a dry fly in a book by Halford. The GRHE can represent many nymphs in both stillwaters and rivers such as mayfly, caddis and many other aquatic insects. In rivers the GRHE is best fished using standard nymphing tactics, while on stillwaters it is best fished with a slow figure of eight retrieve, and can be put in a team with other nymphs anywhere on the cast, it is a must have fly for all anglers.

As well as variations of this pattern there are also patterns with hares ear variations to them, such as.

There are many more that I have not mentioned that I’m sure you lot can show.

So I’m sitting in anticipation of your own variations and themes of this wonderful fly.

Here is a super skinny, anorexic, hares ear buzzer that has worked for me from time to time.
