Default Heavy Pennell ........

Hi Guys

A size 14 skinny Black Pennell was my most productive pattern on the River Carron last season, and a simple black PTN with a copper bead my most productive for Czech stlye nymphing...................

So ive tried a hybrid ............complete with Rook hackle ...............i love it

Anyone use any thing similar ?? Im hoping it will be a killer

Certainly could be fatal if you hit yourself on the head with it, nice looking fly though how did you get the bead to stay behind the hackle?

Easy Mate simply put the bead on start your thread where you want it to sit (leaving room for the hackle/head)

Tie the fly as normal, kink the wire tie off where you started it, bit of varnish cut the thread..........push the bead back. Now start the new thread infront of the bead etc,etc

Its a nice effect makes the soft hackle stick out and flap about !

I have caught more wild brown trout on a Black Pennell than any other fly. Been lucky to be able to fish some of the wildest, remotest, Loughs the west coast of Eire has to offer. Some of which had never seen a fly fisherman. Well, probably not and definately not for many a year. Just put that fly on, single fly, hey they were always up for it. Fiesty wild browns who all fight well above their weight. When I move to the moon (wife suggests soon) I will take a BP.

Looking at your creation has given me an idea, a spider pennell. Your hackle looks spiderish. Nice tie matey I like it. Not absolutely certain about the orange head but it does seem in balance with the tail. Let us know how it fishes. Do.

Beautifully tied fly Englander...

I have used similar coloured micro nymphs whilst Czech nymphing and had some great fish on them, Never tried the Black Pennell though but I will certainly give it a whirl!

Im a very recent convert to the mighty Pennell, my mate fishes it alone on a 10' leader, hes always texting me photos of huge browns for the river, Rainbows from the loch, even 1lb plus Roach ! When ever i text him back to ask what fly the answer is always the same ................ "Black Pennell"

I saw him fish it over a deep fast pool, where anyone else would have the Czech's out yet he pulled a cracking browie up from the depths to his black pennell !

I tried it never looked back...........Except i use hot dyed tippet, Rook hackle and slim profile the above was my best fly last season on the carron.

Hi Englander, I had great success with a similar style of fly last spring either on the point of a team of spiders to act as an anchor of sorts or on a dropper above a heavier nymph , I did have a rather bad experience with a tungsten beaded one and a rod tip , and since then have tended to use a leaded thorax instead , If my memory serves me J Lucas did an article on flies like these in TS not so long ago ,I dont remember a pennell variant however ,nice fly ,sure to catch and very versatile with lots of movement. happy new year . PJ.
