Default Nail uv gel

Hi,
I'm always looking for alternative fly tying material and I'm reading about UV gel for nail that is hardened by UV. Any of you tried it? Is it suitable for fly tying like a epoxy substitute?

happy new year!!

The missus gets her nails done with it, from the sound of it, it's the same stuff as bug bond and the various other UV setting resins on the fly tying market, and equally expensive at the moment, although the resin price will come down in time.

I'm sure there are plenty of applications for it in fly tying, although the results I've seen on the bug bond website aren't particularly impressive, seems to form a transparent blob around the materials. Juding by the patterns on there it perhaps has more applications in the pike & saltwater fly fishing arena, makes nice fry patterns.

Regards,
Terry

G.A.C. are selling a U.V. varnish for £3.99. The local £1 shops sell something very similar !

I think this is the stuff you are referring to.

I bought a kit recently but not used it yet.

Would it not be good for varnished Buzzers? Has anyone tried it for that purpose yet????

Chickenfish and Flytec,

I have been using the brushable version of Clear Cure Goo for buzzers.

I used to have to coat my buzzers with 3 or 4 coats of Sally Hansens, each coat taking longer to dry than the last and all the fuffing around with a rotary dryer. You can bet that at least one out of 12 flies would have a sag in the varnish...

Not any more!

The brushable CC Goo goes on in one coat, stays "wet" as long as I want it to so I can make sure the whole pattern is coated, then a few seconds with the UV torch and it's done!

Lovely, glass like finish, time saved!

Kind regards

Bug Bond Lite is the stuff to use for Buzzers.
I used the Lite on this size 20 nymph.
Click the image to open in full size.
From what i have read the nail gel stuff does not cure very well and its false economy to buy it.
A BugBond kit is less then £30 or the complete kit with the lite and the reg bugbond and a torch and pro tips is less then £45 delivered.
And they last for ages.

FFT,

Thanks for the photo, was hoping someone would post a few pics of smaller stuff using the gel. Your effort is more impressive than the other examples I've seen, perhaps they were using the regular rather than lite.

One question, I read that bug bond is still slightly pliable when set, that being the case, does the resin 'smudge' with excessive handling, and how does the coating stand up to a trouts teeth?

I've a few batches of buzzers to tye up for next season so may give it a go.

Regards,
Terry
