Default winged trial

Just trying to work on a pattern to try for the sedges and tied the wing a bit diifferent than I would normally by tying at the sides so as to produce a tent style wing. Not perfect and is only a trial as the wing has split near the tie in and probably doesnt need the tippet tail but fly tyers tend to shove in things not needed
All comments good bad or indifferent gratefully received

Nice Work Kev. The wing is a little large for my tastes, and the bulk has probably contributed to the issues near the eye. I'd guess at removing about 4 or 5 fibres 'width' off the wing slips, then have another bash.

Nice shot too... just a tiny wee bit soft though. Hand held was it?

Never mind holding yer breath... get the camera on a tripod, or a pile of books or something, and use the timer

Wing depth is pretty much spot on, maybe one strand less, that's all. Lose any more and you're left with a skelf of a wing which no use for a sedge pattern, unless of course, you want it to look like that.

Also, considering it's a sedge, try the trailing edge pointing down like this... / rather than up like this ... \ you'll get a much more realistic looking wing shape.

One more thing, it might help if you tie on each wing separately as you would on a spey pattern. It doesn't always make a great difference but I find it can help with deep HP secondary tented wings.

Oh yeah, shorten the wing slightly and you're right, ditch the tail.

Thank you for all the comments and advice.
I have tied plenty of wings before but not in the tented style so work in progress.
I find that even using pinch and loop I get a bit of drag on the wing when doing this style and it tends to want to split at the tie in point I take it that is down to something with my method, any way I will keep trying until I get it right may have to get some more HP before I finish however
I must say Alex your avatar doesn't do you justice as I came across a picture of you at a fishing venue when I was down in England in June

Nice fly. Wing just about perfect, could maybe do with one strand less.

I cant see from the pic where it is splitting but maybe a little touch of varnish may help hold it together.
