Default Egg Fly

I m considering tying an Egg fly, but I want to know first, Is it worth it? i fish for Atlantic salmon, and rainbow trout, I want to know if any of you have caught a good sized salmon or rainbow trout on an Egg fly. And if you do have experience, is there a particular colour that the fish are attracted to?

Thanks,

flytyer0207

Question

Not from America, no I'm from the UK. I didn't know that, I was just flicking through Peter gathercole's Fly Tying Bible and thought it loked like a nice fly. Why is it frowned upon? And would it be frowned upon if I took it with me to fish for rainbow trout with my mate?

"Egg flies" work best behind spawning fish, not for them, but what's collecting below to harvest the loose eggs.

Do they work? Oh yes, BUT look at the size/colour of the eggs being placed in the river gravel and 'imitate' whose. 'Egg patterns' are not a generic pattern if you want them to work successfully.

The stillwater I fish most has banned egg flies after a lot of deep hooked trout came to them, its C and R mainly. Although most catch and kill should allow them.

They're not used for salmon over here as far as I can tell, don't fish for salmon but most people I know that fish do and would talk about it, The americans use them during the spawning season as the salmon sit and eat stray eggs

A black pennel, I'll give it a try!

I'll tie an egg fly, and see how it works out, though I defo won't use it for salmon. I think the fly itself looks pretty awesome, so I ay just keep it for show!!

The way I see it is, if fish on a river are feeding on roe then you are imitating a natural food source and I know Canadians and Americans use it a lot for this purpose, when trout are feeding on salmon roe. In the country most people use them in stocked stillwaters, where you are very likely to hook up instantly, as I believe the trout see it as the pellets they were fed on. I have never fished or tied one and never will, on a stillwater, but would try one if fishing for trout feeding on roe. Look on Dave Cammis' channel on youtube for a tutorial of an egg fly.

John.

Not all of us Americans use eggs or the brown pellet lures for trout. I find it to be non sporting and just wrong, but that's just me. To each his own and what ever laws apply...
